The names Lewis and Clark have almost always been associated with excellence and adventure. Their expedition westward in search of a water passageway across the country has become etched into the annals of history as one of the earliest and greatest examples of American nationalism and survives not only as a compelling story, but also as a piece of living, breathing history. However, upon examining the expedition, several prudent questions arise: Could the expedition truly have known what awaited them out west? Was meeting the now legendary figure Sacagawea someone the group intended to find? And maybe most importantly, concerning the preparation efforts taken by the expedition’s generals, most notably Meriwether Lewis, did the group†¦show more content†¦Within this territory held a lot of unknown information, but what was known came from writings and works of England’s Captain James Cook and prior expeditions to explore the territory funded by the American Phi losophical Society. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the biological father, so to speak, of the Lewis and Clark expedition, had been well interested in finding â€Å"the shortest most convenient route of communication between the U.S. the Pacific ocean.† One notable example of this was with a French botanist by the name of Andrà © Michaux, who in the year 1793, embarked on an expedition to search for an all-water route access across the continent. Michaux was selected by the then Vice-President Jefferson because the Frenchman was a â€Å"trained scientist in botany, astronomy, mineralogy, and ethnology.† Jefferson’s goals for this expedition was purely geographically based, but also for the sake of knowledge, signifying how curious many Americans were of the then unknown territory. Unfortunately, the expedition didn’t end the way Jefferson imagined it would, as Jefferson discovered Michaux to be a secret agent of the Fren ch Republic who was then recalled on Jefferson’s behalf. Over the following years, Jefferson let the idea sit in the dust, mainly due to political duties, and the mention of an American-led expedition across the continent wouldn’t be mentioned until the early 1800s. Edgar Degas Essay Example Edgar Degas was a French artist, some people would refer to him as the expert of drawing the human figure in motion. He was known as an Impressionists, and was different from all the other artist of his type. Edgar Degas was a person who, at certain times, brashly defied propriety and common social practice. Although he could be the nicest person, at times he would go into rages during social gatherings, becoming hostile with the people who disagreed with his ways and opinions. Edgar Degas was born on July 19, 1834, at Saint-Georges in Paris. His father was a French banker, and his mother was an American from New Orleans. While Degas was growing up his idol was the painter. He began his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres. After studying there he moved on and started classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1854, he left and went to Italy. For 5 years he stayed there and studied Italian art, mainly works. Edgar Degas was known as an Impressionist. The Impressionist were artist who exhibited their works of art in independent shows from 1874 to 1886. It was the common desire to make an open forum for artist to show their work that united the group. The word Impressionist was created by the critic Louis Leroy after seeing paintings in the first Impressionists exhibition in April of 1874. The name that Leroy gave his article in the French periodical was Charivari Exhibition of the Impressionists and sarcastically protected the new style of painting that ignored details, bared brushstrokes, and put unblended colors beside each other. Just like most of the French public, Leroy did not take into consideration the works by Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar as art that deserved serious attention. In 1859 he returned to Paris. There he painted portraits of family and friends and many historical subjects, where he used both classical and romantic styles. In the late 1860s he switched to contemporary themes, painting both theatrical scenes and portraits with big emphasis on social and intellectual implications of props and setting. Around 1868 Degas began to get recognized as an artist. During the early 1870s, the female became Degass favorite theme. In his studio he sketched from a live model and put poses together in groupings that illustrated rehearsal and performance scenes. In 1872 he visited some of his relatives in Louisiana, he painted The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans, which is his only picture that was aquired by a museum in his lifetime. Pastels became Edgars preferred type of art after 1880. By using sharper colors he gave more attention to surface patterning, depicting milliners, and laundresses. Degas depended on memory and earlier drawings for the poses. Even though he became guarded and withdrawn late in life, Edgar made strong friendships with literary people. He exhibited a sculpture in 1881, Little Dancer, and after that his eyesight failed. From there on he turned to sculpture, and modeling figures in wax over metal armatures. The sculptures he made stayed in his studio in disrepair and after his death were cast in bronze.

Romanticism - Washington Irving Romanticism is a literary and artistic movement of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that placed value on emotion or imagination over reason, on the imagination over society. Some sources say Romanticism started in reaction to neo-classicism, or the Enlightenment. The most important result of romanticism was the emphasis laid upon the supernatural. Some writers during this time period were Mary Shelley with Frankenstein, Edgar Allen Poe with various poems and selections, such as The Raven, The TellTale Heart, and The Pit and The Pendulum. One person who had a great effect on the Romantic era was Washington Irving. Some called Irving the first real American writer. Washington Irving was born April 3, 1783, in New York City. He was the eleventh child of Sarah William Irving. His father was a strict man, a merchant and deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He started school at the age of four, but he never took it seriously. Even when he was older, he did not really care for school. He did not impress any of his teachers as outstanding. It was out of school where his real interests developed. His interests were more into reading books of adventure and travel. He was very good at writing, though. He loved the theater. His fascination with the arts grew and was encouraged by one of her sister's boyfriends (Myers 64). His interests in the arts and in the theater were obvious in his works. Irving did not wish to go to college. Though he had great interests in the theater and the arts, his father expected each of his sons to support himself, so Washington decided to be an apprentice in a law office. His employer was Ogden Hoffman and Irving fell in love with his daughter. He also wrote articles for his brother's paper, the Morning Chronicle. He signed his articles "Jonathon Oldstyle". Later he joined his brother William and his friend Jim Paulding in making a humorous magazine called Salmagundi. In 1809, he published Dreidrich Knickerbocker's History of New York. He later went to Europe in 1815. Many people were very anxious to meet him. From 1815-1832, he lived in England, Dresden, Paris, and Spain. In 1819, he published The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, which most people see as his greatest work. This book was a collection of essays and stories. Among the stories it included "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Both these stories were based on German legends. He is very highly acclaimed for these two children's stories. Irving wrote many good selections. Despite this fact, some say Irving could be seen as a lesser man than his predecessors. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "He lacked the religious intensity of Mather, the versatility of Franklin, the statesmanship of Jefferson, or the dedication of Paine. Yet he outlives them all in the history of American letters"(649). Others see him as the first real American poet. Everyone saw him as such a great poet because of The SketchBook. Everyone was reading it in that time. It was all the rage. This book established Irving as a talented writer , one whose elegant good taste seemed to come instinctively. While he was making Dreidrich Knickerbocker's History of New York, he was interrupted by the sudden death of Matilda Hoffman, Ogden Hoffman's daughter. It caused him much grief, but after a while, he learned how to live with it. For some years after the success of his book, his life seemed to him more or less aimless. During these years he turned to variety of pursuits. He primed an American edition of Thomas Campbell's poems, edited the Analectic Magazine and acquired a colonelship during the war of 1812.

A place that is economically perfect. William is the first American in twenty-years that has been allowed to enter into this territory. In this entry he tells about his life. We learn that he a father and a husband. He writes how is becomes harder to say goodbye to the children as he leaves for assignments, however, then he states that even when he is around he sometimes neglects spend time with them.
