English legal system course work ID 1414686 My visit on the 15/12/14 at the Croydon magistrate court was to observe the court proceedings and how the civil and criminal justices system operates in England and wales. Also how magistrates and judges decides cases and why they arrived at certain decision. I arrived earlier in court pass the security checks and went in the court office and explain my purposed of visit. I attended court number eleven which was very busy with cases that day. Court commence at exactly ten in the morning, the presiding magistrate Mr Knowles and two other magistrates, they are also known as justices of the peace, section 121 magistrates court Act 1980. The two other magistrates are Miss Gostic and Miss†¦show more content†¦After reading the charges against the defendant, the presiding magistrates ask the defendant if he understanding the charges against him. And also if he is going to plead guilty or not guilty. In this cases the defendant entered into an early plea of all the charges against him. Early plea in any cases in the UK and Wales is very significant. One it quick, it’s save time and money Wolf Report. The magistrate then commence sentencing hearing. He first consult the court assistance and in sentencing the magistrate has to consider the guide line sentencing council 2010. Because of this cases is an early plea case, the magistrate has to consider the gravity of the case and the circumstances of the accuser. In carrying out the sentencing the judge told the defendant that the offence he committed was enough to send him to prison, but because he pleaded guilty he will reduce his sentence to twenty months of not drinking any vehicles in the United Kingdom and Wales he should also be given two years’ probation period. In this time he should not committed any crime or be seen in any crime scene. He will be arrested and send to jail if he break his probation rules. Normally in this types of case the defendant should have been sentence to at least six month s in prison but because of the early plea and the circumstance of the defendant that makes the magistrates to give him lesser sentences. The Science Courses Needed for College Admission

When applying to college, youll find that requirements for high school preparation in science vary greatly from school to school, but in general, the strongest applicants have taken biology, physics, and chemistry. Some colleges list the science courses that they expect students to have completed in high school; when stated, these courses usually include biology, chemistry, and/or physics. Even if a college doesnt specifically outline these requirements, its probably a good idea to have taken at least, two, if not all three of these courses, as they provide a strong general foundation for college-level STEM classes. This is especially important for students hoping to pursue a degree in fields such as engineering or one of the natural sciences. Note that earth science does not tend to be on the list of courses colleges hope to see. This doesnt mean it isnt a useful class, but if you have a choice between, for example, earth science or AP biology, opt for the latter. Many colleges stipulate that high school science classes must have a laboratory component in order to fulfill their science requirements. In general, standard or advanced biology, chemistry, and physics courses will include a lab, but if youve taken any non-lab science classes or electives at your school, make sure youre aware of the specific requirements of the colleges or universities you apply to in case your courses dont qualify. Students who simply meet the minimum requirements will not stand out from the applicant pool. What If Your High School Doesnt Offer the Recommended Courses? Its extremely rare for a high school to not offer the basic courses in the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics). That said if a college recommends four years of science including courses at an advanced level, students from smaller schools may find the courses simply arent available.   If this describes your situation, dont panic. Keep in mind that colleges want to see that students have taken the most challenging courses available to them. If a certain course isnt offered by your school, a college shouldnt penalize you for not taking a course that doesnt exist. That said, selective colleges also want to enroll students who are well prepared for college, so coming from a high school that doesnt offer challenging college preparatory classes can be a detriment. The admissions office may recognize that you took the most challenging science courses offered at your school, but the student from another school who completed AP Chemistry and AP Biology may be the more attractive applicant because of that students level of college preparation. You do, however, have other options. If youre aiming for top-tier colleges but coming from a high school with limited academic offerings, talk to your guidance counselor about your goals and your concerns. If there is a community college within commuting distance of your home, you might be able to take college classes in the sciences. Doing so has the added benefit that the class credits might transfer to your future college. If a community college isnt an option, look into online AP classes in the sciences or online science classes offered by accredited colleges and universities. Just be sure to read reviews before choosing an online option—some courses are much better than others. Also, keep in mind that online science courses are unlikely to fulfill the lab component that colleges often require.   A Final Word About Science in High School For any college or university, you will be in the best position if you have taken biology, chemistry, and physics. Even when a college requires just one or two years of science, your application will be stronger if youve taken courses in all three of those subject areas. For the countrys most selective colleges, biology, chemistry, and physics represent the minimum requirements. The strongest applicants will have taken advanced courses in one or more of those subject areas. For example, a student might take biology in 10th grade and then AP biology in 11th or 12th grade. Advanced Placement and college classes in the sciences do an excellent job demonstrating your college readiness in science.

The names Lewis and Clark have almost always been associated with excellence and adventure. Their expedition westward in search of a water passageway across the country has become etched into the annals of history as one of the earliest and greatest examples of American nationalism and survives not only as a compelling story, but also as a piece of living, breathing history. However, upon examining the expedition, several prudent questions arise: Could the expedition truly have known what awaited them out west? Was meeting the now legendary figure Sacagawea someone the group intended to find? Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the biological father, so to speak, of the Lewis and Clark expedition, had been well interested in finding â€Å"the shortest most convenient route of communication between the U.S. the Pacific ocean.† One notable example of this was with a French botanist by the name of Andrà © Michaux, who in the year 1793, embarked on an expedition to search for an all-water route access across the continent. Michaux was selected by the then Vice-President Jefferson because the Frenchman was a â€Å"trained scientist in botany, astronomy, mineralogy, and ethnology.† Jefferson’s goals for this expedition was purely geographically based, but also for the sake of knowledge, signifying how curious many Americans were of the then unknown territory. Unfortunately, the expedition didn’t end the way Jefferson imagined it would, as Jefferson discovered Michaux to be a secret agent of the Fren ch Republic who was then recalled on Jefferson’s behalf. . Crawford analyzes that social class dominance can be observed by having the people with power or money do anything to survive, and leave the poor to their death. According to Crawford, microbes not only have caused disease, but they have also infected crops which shaped the history of one particular country, Ireland. In Ireland the only crop that was successful and fed many people was potatoes, but when the potato famine occurred due to an infection of potatoes by the mold Phytophthora infestans, a plant pathogen. In this case microbe infected crops which did not create disease, but did create famine. It was a time of chaos in Ireland and people were desperate for food, but also the economic stability of the country went down. Due to the potato famine, many Irish people died of hunger. On the other side many migrated to America and Canada, which today is the reason for the diversity around the world. But the problems did not end there, since the Irish were looking for jobs they went to workhouses, which were overcrowded and spread diseases such as typhus, which is a microbe that exploits poverty and overcrowding to the full (Crawford 152). Edgar Degas Essay Example Edgar Degas was a French artist, some people would refer to him as the expert of drawing the human figure in motion. He was known as an Impressionists, and was different from all the other artist of his type. Edgar Degas was a person who, at certain times, brashly defied propriety and common social practice. Although he could be the nicest person, at times he would go into rages during social gatherings, becoming hostile with the people who disagreed with his ways and opinions. Edgar Degas was born on July 19, 1834, at Saint-Georges in Paris. His father was a French banker, and his mother was an American from New Orleans. While Degas was growing up his idol was the painter. He began his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres. After studying there he moved on and started classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1854, he left and went to Italy. For 5 years he stayed there and studied Italian art, mainly works. Edgar Degas was known as an Impressionist. The Impressionist were artist who exhibited their works of art in independent shows from 1874 to 1886. It was the common desire to make an open forum for artist to show their work that united the group. The word Impressionist was created by the critic Louis Leroy after seeing paintings in the first Impressionists exhibition in April of 1874. The name that Leroy gave his article in the French periodical was Charivari Exhibition of the Impressionists and sarcastically protected the new style of painting that ignored details, bared brushstrokes, and put unblended colors beside each other. Just like most of the French public, Leroy did not take into consideration the works by Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar as art that deserved serious attention. In 1859 he returned to Paris. There he painted portraits of family and friends and many historical subjects, where he used both classical and romantic styles. In the late 1860s he switched to contemporary themes, painting both theatrical scenes and portraits with big emphasis on social and intellectual implications of props and setting. Around 1868 Degas began to get recognized as an artist. During the early 1870s, the female became Degass favorite theme. In his studio he sketched from a live model and put poses together in groupings that illustrated rehearsal and performance scenes. In 1872 he visited some of his relatives in Louisiana, he painted The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans, which is his only picture that was aquired by a museum in his lifetime. Pastels became Edgars preferred type of art after 1880. By using sharper colors he gave more attention to surface patterning, depicting milliners, and laundresses. Degas depended on memory and earlier drawings for the poses. Even though he became guarded and withdrawn late in life, Edgar made strong friendships with literary people. He exhibited a sculpture in 1881, Little Dancer, and after that his eyesight failed. From there on he turned to sculpture, and modeling figures in wax over metal armatures. The sculptures he made stayed in his studio in disrepair and after his death were cast in bronze.
